9 Ways to Tweet Like Guy Kawasaki

Average people are important. For without them, it would not be easy to spot greatness. Guy Kawasaki is greatness. He continually adapts to new technologies and demonstrates principles for mastering new mediums. Let’s take a moment to observe how he’s managed to earn perfect marks for his twittering techniques.

1. Tweet a lot. I mean incessantly. Holy Kaw! [stats]
- @guykawasaki averages 40.8 tweets per day (tpd)
- Most tweets in one month = 2,159 in April 2009
- 5,049 total tweets have been sent just on Wednesdays, his tweetiest day.

2. Include a number in your tweet.
- e.g. “21 Twitter marketing tips
- e.g. “5 ways to engage your blog readers”
- e.g. “16 Unusual Facts About the Human Body”

3. Include a [trackable] web address in your tweet.
- He uses Objective Marketer, hence URLs look like “http://om.ly/…”
- Hootsuite is another team-based tool for shortenting and tracking URLs
- For my personal tweets, I use bit.ly

4. Rarely retweet (RT) since all interesting information originally comes from yourself [@GuyKawasaki].
- Only 0.91% of @guykawasaki’s tweets are RTs
- Um, no. Not really. Seriously try to produce content people would want to retweet, and return the favor.
- FYI: It’s good etiquette to thank people who RT you.

5. Tease. Show some skin but never the goods.
- e.g. “Tweeting at its purest” [view]
- e.g. “Nice butt or kick butt?” [view]
- e.g. “Consumer Spending Update” [view]

6. Provide solutions. “How to” goes a long way.
- In the last week, @guykawasaki had 56 tweets starting with “How to…”
- 76 tweets had the word “How”

7. Repeat yourself. Don’t over do it, but repeat yourself.
“How to perfect your Twitter marketing strategy – Holy Kaw!”
- 9:45 pm Oct. 13th
- 10:25 am Oct. 13th
- 10:25 pm Oct. 12th
- 11:28 am Oct. 12th

8. Go ahead and promote what you do, but without being a spammer.
Every 12 hours at 8:30, expect to see this: “Save time keeping up on the news by making a custom Alltop page.” For me, it’s not annoying because it is mixed in with many more intriguing tweets. Less than 3% of his weekly tweets directly pitch Alltop, but 95% or more point to Alltop pages. If you clicked one, it’s because YOU were interested. Which brings us to the last point…

9. Be interesting.

Go forth and tweet like the Twitter elite!
